Whale watching at the beautiful Azores
There's hardly anything coming close to watch a 30m long blue whale just next to the boat....
The Baleen whales that consider plankton and krill as there food are attracted by the huge amount of food that concentrates at the mid-atlantic ridge. This is the reason why they meet here for the "big eating". You'll get a change to be in the middle of it, to watch there behavior of these amazing animals and to experience the biggest animals from the boat.
The Blue whale is the biggest animal that ever lived on this earth. With
up to 33m it's bigger than the dinosaurs. A Blue whale weights up to 200
tons - similar to the weight of 33 African elephants.
The Humpback whale is the singer among the whales and the best known one. The flippers of this whale are especially significant. It's a rorquals (furrow whale) just like the blue whale and the main biological specifications are similar to the other members of this family. All members have a series of longitudinal folds of skin running from below the mouth back to the navel. They allow the mouth to expand greatly when feeding. The Humpback is well know for it's jumps.
The Blue and the Humpback whales live in the ocean up to the pack ice. Within this huge area they are seasonal migrating over thousands of kilometers and during May and June we are blessed that they're passing us at the Azores. During Summer they stay in the polar areas and during winter they live in the subtropical and tropical parts.
Besides these migrating whales also the resident whales of the Azores may be seen. Sperm whales with their calves always stay in these waters. Pilot whales and orcas might be seen as well as Sei whales, Fin whales or mink whales. Of course you'll also be able to watch dolphins - Risso's, bottlenose and common dolphins are often seen in this area.
During May and June when spring is starting at the Azores the temperatures are about 16-22°C (60-71°F) and the rain is less frequent.
Experience an island just waking up from it's winter sleep. Explore the Pico - at this time often still covered by snow - and get to admire the blooming Incenso that covers the island with a sweet smell.
The boat trips are distributed on two weeks as there might be bad weather that make it impossible to go out on the boat.
Come and join us at the Azores to great the giants of the ocean!
