Pico– Pico - Whale Watching
The Azores with it's exposed situation in the Atlantic are a great place for whale watching. The waters around Pico are teaming with sea life.
It's an experience to let your heart
smile when you hear the blow of a whale or see the fluke close to your boat. During our daily boat trips we get – with some luck – to see different kinds of whales and dolphins. With our fast pneumatic boats we can reach the animals in short time. Whale watchers on land wireless direct us to the places where the whales are showing up. To not harass them we always follow them very carefully. This is the key to an adventurous encounter during which the whales decide by themselves whether they wanna come closer or stay on distance. Sometimes we see a blow or a fluke, but often they also come up with their heads to watch us. Dolphins are often very playful and it’s a really special experience when hundreds of animals accompany the boat, sometimes even for more than an hour. The 3-hour-boat-trips start either from Madalena, Sao Caetano, Calheta ot Sao Roque. The max number of guests in our boats is 10. The starting time depends on the weather condition and will be announced either the evening before or in the morning. Since 1997 we did see whales or dolphins on 99% of our trips. Of course there’s never a guarantee to see specific species as the ocean ain’t a zoo. The crew and our helpers at the coast do their best to enable you for an unforgettable encounter. Out of respect to these amazing animals it’s prohibited to swim or snorkel with whales and also not allowed to touch the animals – including the dolphins. In summer 2003 a whale watching station on Sao Jorge has been opened The good sightings around that island motivated the opening of the up to now only whale watching station in Velas in 2004. Since 2004 there are also programs offered there to watch whales and get in contact with dolphins. Costs :
