Dance with the Dolphins of the Azores


During our excursions we meet the dolphins in different moods. While we might be seen as invaders during feeding or mating times, we might be welcome among them in calm and relaxed situations. The same goes for different dolphin species. Some are rather shy and move away, others are rather curious, playful and come to our group.

The guides during the program are very experienced with the dolphins of the Azores and they’ll know in which mood the dolphins are. Out of respect to the dolphins, we will only go to join them in the water if the situation allows for that. We also need to comply with certain rules and ethnic principles, to not stress the dolphins. One of these is our method of the soft encounter where you can drift along on the surface without swimming towards the dolphins. We’ll leave the freedom to the dolphins to decide how close they wanna come to our group. The same approach goes for the rule that no more than two swimmers may be simultaneously in the water and that they must return aboard after a maximum of 15 minutes. Swimming with dolphins during this program is limited to 5 dolphin species - the Common Dolphin, Spotted Atlantic dolphin, dolphin strip, bottlenose dolphins and Risso's. Swimming with other dolphin species is not permitted due to regional legislation.

The rules are necessary for all participants to experience the dolphins and swim with them under the best conditions. Keep in mind that dolphins are only curious, playful and open-minded as long as they do not feel threatened or harassed.

The program begins with your arrival on Pico or Faial and the transfer to your accommodation on the first day. The second day is for you to explore the island of Pico on your own or also to spot some dolphins from Vigia just above the bay. The next day we begin with a detailed briefing at the base. During the subsequent 5 excursions, you’ll get the possibility to swim among up to 5 types of dolphins. The afternoons are left to you – to explore the island, reflect your dolphin experience of the day or simply relax. You have free access to all facilities at the base - this includes the library, sea kayaks and also the use of bicycles. The program ends with the transfer to the airport of Pico or Faial.
